Enlisting and Providing Support

I would like to ask my classmates what their opinion of inclusion in early childhood programs is? Would you be comfortable having a child with a disability in your classroom. What do you believe would be your biggest concern or obstacle? Do you see any benefits to including children with disabilities in a typical class?

I am seeking parental opinions on inclusion also. I am interested in hearing from both the parents of  children  with disabilities and parents with typically developing children. I would like to know if they have had positive or negative experiences.

I have found many great blogs and websites through my research. They are geared towards parents and educators of children with disabilities.

  1. I don't mind having a child in an inclusion classroom as long as the teacher have some kind of knowledge/education in handling a child with needs.Teacher's should take classes on how to manage special need children, how to accommodate them. It's more than just placing special needs children into a general ed class. I'm aware that special needs children learn from their peers and begin to do things they other wise wouldn't because they learned it from a classmate. I wouldn't mind if my child was in a inclusion classroom only if the teacher was certified in doing so.

  2. Cynthia Yes I will like to have child with disability in my class in fact I had children's with disability in my class at this time I have a child with Autism, it is so nice to have him in the class and to learn with him, it is also good to see how the other children's help teachers with the child. The students in the classroom know we can have loud music or our friend would start to cry and scream the other students wear their head phones in the music area, they also try not to make loud noises.

  3. No I would not mind having a child with disabilities in my classroom, but there are many things to consider. One of them being if the parents are aware that the child has a disability. I ask this because many parents are blind to the fact, do not know or are even in denial or do not want their child to be labeled. The reason as to why I say this is because we have a child in our preschool program in which the parents are afraid for their child to be labeled. This child is clearly autistic and very smart, he unfortunately needs a more one on one atmosphere because he does not want to and refuses to engage in activities and play with other children.
When working with children with disabilities another thing to consider is if the classroom is equipped to have a child with disabilities? Of course the simplest things to consider is room arrangement, of course we must consider arranging the room to meet his/her needs. We might need to accommodate our materials and even create materials, again depending on the disability and even order materials. Again it all depends on the severity of the disability, but no I would not mind have a child with special needs in my classroom. If we are advocates we must advocate for them even in our own classrooms.

    1. I believe that inclusion is an essential and vital component to success of not only the special needs students but their peers as well. I have a child who recieved a "label" and as a parent at first I was terrified that he would be singled out by educators and his peers. Actually the label opened up a world of opportunities that were unavailable to him prior to testing and diagnosis. As an educator the label and information that comes with it provides me essential information I need to educate that student using appropriately.
I have enjoyed reading your Blog and contributions of information through this course. I found this very helpful as I worked through the course work. Thank you and best of luck in your future career endeavors.

  4. I would not mind having a child with a disability in my classroom. I think that I would want to take some classes to make sure that I am doing things right. I think I would need to make sure that I have classroom management and it would go great. You have to plan and make sure things are in order and your class will do great.

  5. Cindy,
Yes, I would feel comfortable having a child with a disability in my classroom. My biggest concern would be making sure that he was getting the proper services whether from me or from a paraprofessional. My biggest obstacle would be making sure that everyone in the class treats the child just like anyone else in the class. I would make sure that the students know to not treat him any differently from any of the other students. Yes, I see the benefits of having the child in the class this way the children know that some people might look different but they are all the same. Children should feel comfortable being around other children and if they are around a child then they will not try to treat them any different just because they do not look like them.
